Chelsea manager Luiz Felipe Scolari has revealed striker Didier Drogba is set to miss the start of the season.

Drogba, 30, has spent the summer recuperating from a knee injury and will not be fit for the Premier League opener against Portsmouth on 17 August.

“Didier will not play in our first game and will probably miss the second against Wigan,” said Scolari.

“If there are no more problems he should be ready for the game after that, Tottenham on 31 August.”

However, Scolari concedes that the nature of Drogba’s injury makes it difficult to predict exactly when the Ivory Coast star will return to full fitness.

The Chilean player of the year has joined Rovers on an initial one-year loan deal from Audax Italiano with the Lancashire side having the option to sign him permanently next summer.

If manager Paul Ince decides to keep Villanueva, the 22-year-old has already agreed terms on a three-year contract. The attack-minded player has 12 caps for Chile and was a prolific scorer with his former club. Although he is little known outside his native continent at present, Ince is certain Villanueva will prove a big hit at Ewood Park.

Paul has dunked before, which everyone on Team USA was quick to remind Dwight Howard of, given that he was the guy Paul dunked over in a Hornets-Magic game a couple of years back.

The other two items, however, were true rarities, and Kobe Bryant’s shutting down of Jasikevicius was one of the biggest eye-openers, as Team USA handled Lithuania with relative ease in a 120-84 victory that wrapped up the Macau portion of its pre-Olympic tour.

“That’s what I do,” said Bryant, who gave himself a new nickname: “The Doberman.”

There was pretty much nothing but a long, long list of positives for Team USA in this 36-point stomping, so let’s just go ahead and rattle off a few:

• Dwyane Wade again looked like the Wade of two years ago, punctuating a 7-for-9, 19-point performance with yet another powerful windmill dunk late in the fourth quarter that had his teammates jumping off the bench and roaring in admiration.

“He’s back. That’s all I can tell you, he’s back,” Carmelo Anthony said.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — The Tampa Bay Rays are counting on Carlos Pena’s bat to help them stay in the pennant race.

The struggling slugger homered for the fourth time in eight games Friday night, helping the AL East leaders beat the Detroit Tigers 5-2 and retain a three-game lead in the division over Boston.

“I really believe in our guys,” Rays manager Joe Maddon said. “I believe they’re going to come through in the clutch and keep getting better.”

Pena is one of the players — along with Carl Crawford and B.J. Upton — the Rays expect to contribute more offensively after failing to add another bat before Thursday’s non-waiver trade deadline.

LOS ANGELES - The newest Dodger stood in front of his locker and took a long, deep breath. He was working on three hours sleep. He was fresh off an on-field press conference circus. He was soaking up the quiet.

“You need some pants?” asked first baseman James Loney. “I’ve got an extra pair. They’re huge. I never wear ‘em.”

Manny Ramirez looked over and smiled like he was laying eyes on an old friend: “Nah, man. I’m good. It’s all good.”

It wasn’t the shirt off Loney’s back, but it wasn’t far off. There may be guys in the Boston clubhouse who were itching to see Ramirez get out of town, but in Los Angeles the regulars were just looking to help the new kid feel at home.
